Data Recovery — Brooklyn & NYC

Failed hard drives, dead SSDs, accidentally formatted partitions, corrupted RAID arrays, drowned MacBooks — we recover the files most other shops won’t touch.

💰 Starting at $150 logical recovery; mechanical recoveries quoted after evaluation

Your drive made a clicking sound and now Windows asks to format it. Your MacBook fell in the toilet. You “permanently deleted” the folder with three years of photos. Your office RAID 5 lost two drives at once. We’ve seen all of it and we recover most of it — in the Brooklyn shop, no shipping required.

For data recovery we offer free evaluation: bring the drive in, we tell you within 24–48 hours whether we can recover, what it will cost, and what to expect.

What you get

  • Free evaluation on every drive — you only pay if we can recover
  • Logical recovery (deleted, formatted, corrupted, unbootable) from $150
  • SSD recovery — failing controllers, SMART errors, sudden disappearance
  • External drive and USB stick recovery — connector damage, corrupted file systems
  • Mechanical recovery (clicking drives, spindle failure, head crash) — quoted case-by-case
  • RAID 0 / 1 / 5 / 6 / 10 array reconstruction from any number of working drives
  • Mac, Windows, Linux file systems — APFS, HFS+, NTFS, exFAT, ext4
  • Phone, tablet and SD card recovery — water damage, broken screens, locked devices

Step one — DO NOT keep using the drive

Every minute you keep using a failing drive, you’re overwriting the exact sectors that hold your missing files. If the drive is still spinning and you’ve lost data, shut it down and bring it in. If it’s already failed, don’t freeze it (that internet myth has cost more drives than it’s ever saved).

For an accidental delete on a system drive: power down immediately. Don’t install undelete utilities while booted from the same drive — every install writes new data over the deleted files.

What we recover most often

  • Photos and videos — phone backups, SD cards, dead cameras, drowned phones
  • Patient charts and PMS databases — Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental SQL files (see also our dental backup & recovery page)
  • QuickBooks files and Outlook PST archives — small business cases we see weekly
  • Office documents, contracts, designs — DOCX, XLSX, PSD, AI, INDD, CAD
  • Tax returns and bank statements — usually before someone needs them in two days

What we don’t do — and what we’ll refer you to

We do logical and basic mechanical drive recovery. For severe mechanical failures that need a Class-100 cleanroom — head swaps, platter transplants, fire-damaged drives — we refer you to a partner cleanroom lab. We don’t mark up the referral; you pay them direct.

Frequently asked questions

Can you recover files from a dead hard drive?

Yes, in most cases. Drives that won’t mount but spin up cleanly are usually fully recoverable. Clicking drives need more careful handling and either work or need cleanroom service. We tell you after the free evaluation, before you commit.

How much does data recovery cost?

Logical recoveries — deleted, formatted, corrupted, unbootable — start at $150. Mechanical recoveries (failing drives) are quoted case-by-case after evaluation, usually $250–$800 depending on severity. Cleanroom recoveries through our partner lab are $800–$2,500.

Can you recover photos from a phone that fell in water?

Depends on how long it was in, how long ago it happened, and what kind of phone. iPhones with broken displays but a working board often recover; Android phones with FBE (file-based encryption) and a dead board are harder. Bring it in for a free check.

How long does data recovery take?

Logical recovery is 1–3 days from when you drop the drive off. Mechanical recoveries take 3–7 days. RAID reconstruction is usually 2–5 days depending on how many drives we have and which ones survived.

Will my recovered files be private?

Yes. Drives stay in the shop. We don’t open files except to verify recovery worked. After you confirm the files are good and pick them up, the working copies on our side are wiped. We sign an NDA on request for business clients.

How do I prevent this from happening again?

A 3-2-1 backup setup: 3 copies of your data, 2 different media, 1 offsite. We can set this up for you in 30 minutes for a home user. For dental and small business, see our dedicated backup and recovery page.
